Abstract Phytoestrogens (PEs) are chemical compounds from the secondary metabolism of some plants, they have a potential effect on the reproductive parameters of domestic animals, acting as agonists or antagonists of estrogen receptors. The objective of this review is to know the effects produced by a diet rich in PEs on the reproductive physiology of slaughter animals. A systematic review was carried out in two databases using keywords related to the effects produced by the intake of PEs in the diet on the reproduction of animals for slaughter, only controlled studies developed in vivo were considered. Contradictory results were found, on the one hand, the intake of a high content of polyphenolic compounds from different fodders, in the bovine female, was related to the decrease in fertility, presence of abortions and ovarian cysts; on the other hand, the intake of the high content of PEs induced an increase in the semen quality of the males of the species: cattle, sheep and leporids, so these effects can be attributed to the concentration, the type of PEs, sex, species and even the breed of the animal.

Resumen Los fitoestrógenos (FEs) son compuestos químicos provenientes del metabolismo secundario de algunos vegetales, tienen un efecto potencial sobre los parámetros reproductivos de los animales domésticos, al actuar como agonistas o antagonistas de los receptores estrogénicos. El objetivo de esta revisión es conocer los efectos que produce una dieta rica en FEs en la fisiología reproductiva de los animales de abasto. Se realizó una revisión sistemática en dos bases de datos mediante el uso de palabras clave relacionadas con los efectos que produce la ingestión de FEs en la dieta, sobre la reproducción de animales de abasto, únicamente se consideraron los estudios controlados desarrollados in vivo. Se encontraron resultados contradictorios, por un lado, la ingesta de un alto contenido de los compuestos polifenólicos, provenientes de distintos forrajes en la hembra bovina, estuvo relacionado con la disminución de la fertilidad, presencia de abortos y de quistes ováricos; por otro lado, la ingesta de alto contenido de FEs indujo un aumento en la calidad seminal de los machos de las especies: bovinos, ovinos y lepóridos; por lo que, dichos efectos se pueden atribuir a la concentración, al tipo de FEs, sexo, especie e incluso a la raza del animal.

Resumen En semen de mamíferos, se ha demostrado que la viscosidad influye de manera negativa para su conservación. En semen de aves los estudios sobre las características físicas de los eyaculados son limitados, particularmente la viscosidad no ha sido estudiada. Los medios para la criopreservación, no consideran la viscosidad para mantener la viabilidad espermática. Por lo cual, el objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto de la viscosidad en el medio para mantener su viabilidad post descongelación. Se determinó los parámetros de evaluación básica, de maduración y reacción acrosomal evaluando la presencia y distribución de Ca2+ mediante la co-incubación con clortetraciclina. Se realizaron 25 evaluaciones de pool seminal, criopreservados en medio Lake suplementado con 6 % de dimetilacetamida y con 0 % (Testigo), 10 %, 30 % y 45 % de ficoll, para ajustar la viscosidad del medio a condiciones similares a las del semen y del líquido oviductal y a un grado mayor de viscosidad. La movilidad espermática fue menor (P(0.05) en alícuotas con mayor porcentaje de ficoll. El porcentaje de espermatozoides vivos fue similar (P>0.05) en el testigo y todas las alícuotas con diferente porcentaje de ficoll. La maduración espermática presentó un mayor (P(0,05) porcentaje de espermatozoides no capacitados cuando se utilizó 10% de ficoll. De manera inversa el porcentaje de espermatozoides con reacción acrosomal fue menor (P(0,05) también cuando se utilizó 10 % de ficoll. Los resultados de este estudio demuestran que variaciones en el grado de viscosidad del medio, pueden mantener o incrementar la viabilidad espermática post descongelación.

Abstract In mammalian semen, viscosity has been shown to have a negative influence on its conservation. In bird semen, studies on the physical characteristics of ejaculates are limited, particularly viscosity has not been studied. The media for cryopreservation do not consider viscosity to maintain sperm viability. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of viscosity on the medium to maintain its viability after thawing. The parameters of basic evaluation, maturation and acrosome reaction were determined, evaluating the presence and distribution of Ca2+ through co-incubation with chlortetracycline. Twenty-five (25) evaluations of seminal pool were performed, cryopreserved in Lake medium supplemented with 6 % dimethylacetamide and with 0 % (Control), 10 %, 30 % and 45 % ficoll, to adjust the viscosity of the medium to conditions similar to those of semen and oviductal fluid and to a higher degree of viscosity. Sperm motility was lower (P(0.05) in aliquots with a higher percentage of ficoll. The percentage of live spermatozoa was similar (P>0.05) in the control and all aliquots with different percentage of ficoll. Sperm maturation presented a higher (P(0.05) percentage of non-capacitated spermatozoa when 10 % ficoll was used. Conversely the percentage of spermatozoa with acrosome reaction was also lower (P(0.05) when 10 % ficoll was used. The results of this study show that variations in the degree of viscosity of the medium can maintain or increase sperm viability after thawing.

Abstract Cats and dogs have a very close relationship with humans. Currently, the overpopulation of these species in various countries worldwide has been identified as a severe public health problem. To establish effective programs for population control, it is necessary to estimate the number of cats and dogs. To our knowledge, there are no studies that assess the number of canine and feline population by state in Mexico. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the canine and feline population living at homes using official information reported by the National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Informatics [Instituto Nacional de Estadística Geografía e Informática] through a constant-share model, a ratio extrapolation method. The estimated dog population living at homes was 42 625 010 dogs and 7 346 925 cats (at least 5.8 times less than the number of dogs). By 2022, the Mexico’s estimated human:dog ratio was 2.4:1, and the human:cat ratio 17.6:1. The Estado de México had more than six million dogs and 962 177 cats. Colima had the smallest estimated dog population (245 489), and Baja California Sur the smallest estimated cat population (slightly over 30 000). Health authorities and veterinary practitioners should promote responsible ownership to increase veterinary care and control the birth of dogs and cats.

Abstract Desmodus rotundus is a transmitter of zoonotic and emerging diseases to humans and livestock, such as rabies. Most infectious diseases are spatially limited by the presence of the transmitter, whose abundance and survival are influenced by environmental conditions and the presence of food sources. A tool that facilitates its study is the use of Geographic Information Systems. The objective of this study was to analyze the interaction of populations of hematophagous bats and humans, through the development of a probable model of dispersal of D. rotundus based on known shelters and different environmental variables, in addition to analyzing the relationship between shelters identified for three years and their proximity to human settlements, as a process of coexistence. The study was conducted in the state of San Luis Potosí from 2014 to 2016. A total of 180 shelters of D. rotundus distributed towards the Huasteca region were identified, 80 % of these were built by man and 57 % were inhabited. A buffer of 5 km around from the location of each shelter was calculated, finding inside a total of 976 rural communities and 15 cities, with 337,836 inhabitants. The average distance from shelters to the first human settlement was 518.65 ± 11.33 m. It is necessary to continue studying the association between urbanization and the emergence of zoonoses, through the understanding of the interactions between wild animals-livestock-humans.

Resumen Desmodus rotundus es transmisor de enfermedades zoonóticas y emergentes a los humanos y al ganado, como el caso de la rabia. La mayoría de las enfermedades infecciosas están limitadas espacialmente por la presencia del transmisor, cuya abundancia y supervivencia son influenciadas por las condiciones ambientales y la presencia de fuentes de alimentación. Una herramienta que facilita su estudio es el uso de los Sistemas de Información Geográfica. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la interacción de las poblaciones de murciélagos hematófagos y humanos, a través de la elaboración de un modelo probable de dispersión del D. rotundus basado en refugios conocidos y diferentes variables medioambientales, además de analizar la relación entre refugios identificados durante tres años y su cercanía con asentamientos humanos, como un proceso de coexistencia. El estudio se llevó a cabo en el estado de San Luis Potosí del año 2014 al 2016. Se identificaron un total de 180 refugios de D. rotundus distribuidos hacia la zona de la Huasteca, el 80 % de éstos fueron construidos por el hombre y el 57 % se encontraron habitados. Se calculó un buffer de 5 km a la redonda a partir de la ubicación de cada refugio, encontrando en su interior un total de 976 comunidades rurales y 15 ciudades, con 337,836 habitantes. La distancia media de los refugios hasta el primer asentamiento humano fue de 518.65 ± 11.33 m. Es necesario continuar estudiando la asociación entre la urbanización y el surgimiento de zoonosis, a través del entendimiento de las interacciones entre animales silvestres-ganadería - humanos.

Abstract Nowadays, the third part of parrots in the world is endangered or vulnerable; an alternative for their preservation is assisted reproduction in captivity through hormonal manipulation. In birds, GnRH is the main hormone which controls reproductive physiology, it is known there are three types: GnRH-I, GnRH-II and GnRH-III, involved in the release or inhibition of luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulant hormone to control gonadal and gametic development. The objective of this study was, to evaluate the effect of administrating synthetic GnRH-I in the testicular development of Melopsittacus undulatus. Twenty-eight adult budgerigars were randomly divided in two groups: control (n=14) and treated (n=14) with a unique dose of synthetic GnRH-I. Testicular development was assessed through ultrasonography and density was evaluated with pixels. Germinal diameter and thickness of germinal epithelium were determined with histology; there were identified and countified different cellular strains in seminiferous tubules therefore spermatobioscopy. Results. Ecographic density was: control group: 76 ± 7 pixels, treated group 41 ± 3 pixels. Thickness of germinal epitellium, 51.5 ± 2.9µm and 73.1 ± 3.1µm, for control group and treated group respectively. Sperm concentration in the treated group was 300% superior than in control group. It is concluded that the administration of synthetic GnRH-I, is a viable alternative to be used as part of the assisted reproductive techniques to induce reproduction.

Small-scale family swine production can be seen in thousands of small communities and suburban zones; it is characterized by breeding rural pigs in rustic facilities with basic feed and productive parameters, well below those of technologically advanced farms, with mortality reaching up to 50% of the litter. This type of production involves a large number of producers and has a critical impact on family income. At slaughter, these carcasses have a high probability of being seized because of the presence of cysticercoids (T. solium), losing a high percentage of its economic value; due to absence of slaughterhouses in rural communities, this meat is directed to consumption without health inspection, increasing the risk of transmission of this zoonosis. This paper describes the productive and reproductive characteristics of the backyard production system of pigs in a rural community. Human to pig ratio was 3:1. During the year, 308 piglets were born in 43 litters, 51.7% males and 48.3% females, with an average weight of 40.47 kg at 6 months and 65.30 kg at 10 months. They were slaughtered at 7.3 months on average. The highest death rate was found between 0 and 1 month of age. In many rural communities of Mexico pigs are fed with waste generated in homes, helping maintain the communities clean, as well as with the excreta of other species that usually roam freely, situation that can promote dissemination of parasitic diseases.

La porcicultura familiar es una forma de producción que existe en miles de pequeñas comunidades y zonas conurbadas, caracterizada por la crianza de razas criollas en instalaciones rústicas, con alimentación básica y parámetros productivos inferiores a los de las granjas tecnificadas y una mortalidad hasta de 50% de la camada. Este tipo de producción involucra gran número de productores e impacta críticamente en el ingreso familiar. Al sacrificio, estas canales tienen una alta probabilidad de decomiso por la presencia de cisticercosis (T. solium), por lo que pierden un alto porcentaje de su valor económico; debido a la ausencia de rastros en comunidades rurales, esta carne se destina al consumo directo, sin inspección sanitaria, incrementando los riesgos de transmisión de esta zoonosis. En este trabajo se describen las características productivas y reproductivas del sistema de producción de cerdos en traspatio en una comunidad rural. La razón humano-cerdo fue de 3:1, durante el año se obtuvieron 43 camadas, con 308 lechones nacidos vivos, 51.7% machos y 48.3% hembras, con un peso promedio de 40.47 kg a los 6 meses y 65.30 kg a los 10 meses, siendo sacrificados a los 7.3 meses en promedio, los animales que tienen entre 0 y 1 mes de edad presentan la tasa más alta de mortalidad sin que sean sacrificados. En muchas comunidades rurales de México, se alimentan con desperdicios que se generan en las casas, así como las excretas de otras especies que por lo regular deambulan libremente, situación que puede generar enfermedades parasitarias.

Dog overpopulation is a major health problem in developing countries due to the existence of some zoonotic diseases in which dogs act as reservoirs, besides the aggressive events to humans. Distribution, behavior patterns and combined methodologies are needed aspects in the design of successful dog population control programs. Coumestrol is a phytoestrogen which induces alterations in the reproductive male system, when bind to alpha and beta estrogen receptors acting as an agonist or antagonist fashion. Both receptor types also exist in central nerve regions governing sexual behavior of those animals such as the preoptic area, ventro medial nucleous, the amygdala and the olfactory bulb. In this study, 300 μg/kg coumestrol was orally administered to male dogs, once a week for a 4 week period. Dogs were freed for 5 min in a 9 m² area having a recipient containing vaginal discharges from estrous dog females and other similar vessel containing sterile saline solution. Smelling latency time for each recipient, smelling frequency and territory marking in response to stimulus, was recorded. At the end of the test, semen was collected and evaluated. A significative difference (P < 0.005) in smelling latency time and smelling frequency to the vaginal discharge was found; sperm count decreased from 518.4 ± 215.4 × 10(6) to 57.6 ± 50.4 × 10(6) at week 4 and the abnormal sperm morphology increased from 14.7 ± 3.3% at 0 week to 60.0 ± 20%. In conclusion, 300 μg/kg coumestrol given orally to male dogs for 4 weeks induces alterations in the olfactory behavior along with an oligo and teratospermic effect.

La sobrepoblación canina es un problema importante de salud pública debido a la transmisión de enfermedades zoonóticas y las agresiones hacia el humano. En el diseño de programas para controlar la población canina se requiere del conocimiento de su distribución, comportamiento y metodologías combinadas para tener éxito. El coumestrol es un fitoestrógeno que induce alteraciones en el aparato reproductor de los machos al unirse a los receptores estrogénicos alfa y beta, en donde actúa de manera dosis-dependiente como agonista o antagonista. Estos receptores también existen en las estructuras del sistema nervioso que regulan el comportamiento sexual, como la región preóptica, núcleo ventromedial, la amígdala y el bulbo olfatorio. En este estudio se administró coumestrol (300 μg/kg) por vía oral a perros machos, una vez por semana durante cuatro semanas; los perros se colocaron durante cinco minutos en un área aislada de 9 m² en donde se colocó un frasco conteniendo secreciones vaginales obtenidas de perras en estro y otro con solución salina estéril. Se registró el tiempo de latencia de los perros para olfatear cada frasco, su frecuencia de respuesta y la frecuencia con que se presentó conducta de marcaje en respuesta al estímulo. Una vez concluido el experimento, se obtuvo semen y se evaluó. Se encontró diferencia significativa (P < 0.005) en el periodo de latencia y frecuencia con la que el macho se acercó a oler las secreciones vaginales y el conteo espermático disminuyó de 518.4 ± 215.4 × 10(6) al inicio del estudio a 57.6 ± 50.4 × 10(6) en la semana cuatro y el porcentaje de anormalidades espermáticas aumentó de 14.7 ± 3.3 puntos en la semana 0 a 60.0 ± 20.0% en la semana cuatro. Se concluye que el tratamiento de perros con coumestrol durante cuatro semanas ocasiona alteraciones en la conducta de exploración olfatoria y tiene un efecto oligospérmico y teratospérmico.
